Short Discord usernames: 2, 3 and 4 letter names
A short Discord username is easy to type, easy to remember and looks clean in every chat. The problem is that everyone wants one. Here is how many short names exist, which ones you can realistically get and how to find a free one without paying anyone.
How many short names exist
Discord usernames have 2 to 32 characters: lowercase letters a to z, digits 0 to 9, the underscore and the period, with no two periods in a row. Capital letters are turned into lowercase, so Nova and nova are one name.

Every name is unique, so each line in this table is the whole supply for all Discord users. 2 and 3 letter names were among the first to be claimed when Discord switched to unique usernames.
What is realistic today
- 2 characters: extremely rare. They free up only when their owners rename or delete the account, and many people watch them.
- 3 letters: rare. One comes back only when its owner renames or the account is deleted, so you need frequent checks and luck.
- 3 characters with a digit,
_or.: likek.oorx_7. Still hard, but noticeably easier than letters only. - 4 letters: realistic if you are flexible. Pronounceable ones get taken fast; unusual combinations stay free longer.
- 4 characters with a period or underscore: a good target. There are about 2 million combinations.
- 5 letters: often free if pronounceable, and almost always free with one symbol inside.
Tricks that make short names possible
A period or an underscore inside
k.o, ne.o, x_7 and lu_na keep a name short while multiplying the number of options. Remember the rule: no two periods in a row, so a..b is not allowed, but a.b.c is.
Pronounceable patterns
Consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel (CVCV) gives names like rimo, tavu or kelo. They read like words, and there are thousands of them. A scan by pattern finds free ones far faster than guessing.
Words in other languages
Short words in Spanish, Portuguese, German or French often have no accents: sol, mar, luz, nebel, lune. If a word has an accent, the version without it may be free.
Letters plus one digit
kiro7 or 7kiro reads almost as well as kiro and is much more likely to be free.

When a short name is free, claim it yourself: User Settings, My Account, Edit next to Username, type the name and confirm with your password. Your account must be verified by email or phone, and Discord allows up to 2 username changes a week. Step by step with pictures: how to claim a username.
Questions
Can I get a 1 letter Discord username?
No. The minimum is 2 characters, so the shortest possible names are things like ko, x7 or a. with a period.
Do capital letters make a different name?
No. Discord forces usernames to lowercase, so KIRO and kiro are the same name. If you want capitals, use them in your display name.
Is a name with a period or underscore worth less?
To collectors, yes. For everyday use the difference is small: k.ro is still four characters, easy to type and unique to you. Many people prefer a short name with a symbol to a long clean one.
How fast do I need to claim a free short name?
As fast as you can. Other people may be watching the same name, and a free short name can be taken within minutes. That is why alerts matter more than luck.
Can someone take my short name from me?
Not while you keep it. A username stays yours until you change it or your account is deleted. Protect the account itself: turn on two-factor authentication and never share your token or password.
