OG Minecraft usernames: 3 letters, words and old names

OG is what players call a Minecraft name that is hard to get: three characters, a plain dictionary word, or a name registered in the early years of the game. Almost all of them are taken, but taken does not mean forever. Names change hands every day, and the only safe way to get one is to catch it when it frees up.

What counts as an OG name

There is no official list. In practice players mean one of three things:

  • Three characters. The shortest name you can register today: Zyx, K_7, Ro9.
  • A real word. Ember, Frost, Lunar: short, readable, no digits glued on.
  • An old name. Registered long ago and never changed. A few early accounts even have names shorter than 3 characters, which can no longer be registered at all.

What they share is simple: clean, short, easy to say, and somebody got there first.

3-letter names

A Minecraft name uses 26 letters, 10 digits and the underscore. Case does not make a name different, so there are 37 options per character and 37 × 37 × 37 = 50,653 possible three-character names. With letters only it is 26 × 26 × 26 = 17,576.

Minecraft has been sold for well over a decade, so expect practically every pronounceable three-letter name to have an owner. What turns up from time to time:

  • names with a digit or an underscore in them, like X_7 or Q9z;
  • letter combinations nobody can pronounce;
  • names whose owner has just changed to something else.

We do not publish a count of free three-letter names: it changes daily and any number would be out of date by the time you read it. A scan shows the real picture on the day you run it.

4 and 5 letters: where the chances are

11,025

four-letter names that read as a word (CVCV)

11.9 million

five-letter names, letters only

Four letters is where searching by hand stops working and a scan starts to pay off. The pronounceable pattern consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel (Bavo, Zeki, Nuxa) gives 11,025 names, a set a scan gets through quickly.

Five letters is a huge space, so here the pattern matters more than the length: a real word, a word with one swapped letter, or a word with an underscore. Ideas for building such lists are in how to find an available Minecraft username.

How OG names come back

A taken name returns in one way: its owner changes it. The change is free and allowed once every 30 days, so it happens more often than you might think.

The old name then leaves Mojang profiles at once, and by player reports becomes available to others about 37 days later. A check during that time finds no profile, which is why we show such names as probably free rather than free.

Put the names you want on a watchlist. You get an alert when one leaves Mojang profiles and another when the hold should be over.

Why buying an OG account is a risk

Search suggestions are full of “OG Minecraft names for sale”. What is being sold there is not a name but a whole account, and that is where the risk is.

A Minecraft account is a Microsoft account, and the Microsoft Services Agreement says: “You cannot transfer your Microsoft account credentials to another user or entity.” The Minecraft EULA in turn forbids trying to make money from anything Mojang has made.

The buyer carries the risk

The seller keeps the original email, purchase details and recovery options, and can ask support to return the account. The buyer loses both the name and the money, and has nobody to complain to.

Catching a name that frees up breaks no rules: you register a free name on your own account. Curious what makes one name worth more than another? See what a Minecraft username is worth.

Clmify scans short and rare Minecraft names on our servers and alerts you when one leaves Mojang profiles. Try a name on the Minecraft page or compare plans on pricing.
