How to find an available Minecraft username
Every obvious Minecraft name was taken years ago, but free ones are still out there. You find them faster with a method than with luck: build a list from a pattern, check all of it at once, and watch the names that are taken today.
Ideas that still work
A Minecraft name is 3 to 16 characters: English letters, digits and underscores, and the underscore can go anywhere. That leaves room to keep a name readable:
- A short word with one change.
Ember_,Frostt,Lunar7. One extra character often frees a word that is taken on its own. - An underscore instead of a space.
Red_Fox,Old_Oak. Minecraft allows several underscores, including at the start and at the end. - A made-up word that sounds real.
Zeki,Nuxa,Tiko. Consonant and vowel in turn reads well and is less crowded than dictionary words. - A word from another language. Short words outside English are taken less often.
What rarely works: plain English words of 3 to 5 letters, first names, and anything a popular streamer already uses. The exact rules are in Minecraft username rules.
Patterns worth scanning
Checking names one by one is slow. A scan takes a whole set and checks every name in it.
CVCV
consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel: 11,025 names like Bavo
LLDD
two letters and two digits: 67,600 names like Kx07
Keyword
your word with every two-character ending: 1,296 names
- By length. Every name of 3 or 4 characters. Useful to see what is left among the shortest names.
- By pattern. You set the shape, for example
CVCVorLLDD, and the scan builds the list. - By keyword. You give a word, the scan adds endings:
Nova7x,NovaQi,Nova01. - Your own list. Up to 300,000 names you prepared yourself, one per line.
How scans run and what they cost is described in how scans work.
How to check if a name is available
For one name, type it on our Minecraft page. It is free and needs no account. We ask Mojang whether a profile with this name exists:
- Taken. A profile exists.
- Probably free. There is no profile with this name.
We say probably because a name with no profile can still be on hold after its owner changed it, or banned. For an ordinary name it almost always means free. For a short or famous one, read when Minecraft names free up before you celebrate.
The only final check is Minecraft itself: the name change form on minecraft.net tells you whether you can take the name.
If the name is taken: watchlist
A taken name is not lost. Owners change names for free every 30 days, and the old name becomes available after a hold of about 37 days, by player reports.
Add the name to your watchlist and we check it on the interval you choose. You get an alert when the name leaves Mojang profiles, the window when it should become available, and a second alert when that window is reached.
Add a name while it is still taken. Then we know when it disappeared and can show a precise window instead of a rough date.
Claim it
Pick the name and a backup
Keep two or three names from your list in case the first one is gone by the time you try.
Check your own 30-day wait
You can only change your name once every 30 days. If you changed it recently, the name you found may not wait for you.
Change your name on minecraft.net
The steps are in how to change your Minecraft username. The change is free.
Clmify scans whole sets of Minecraft names on our servers and watches the taken ones for you, with alerts in Discord, Telegram, email or the browser. Start on the Minecraft page or see what each plan includes on pricing.
