When do Discord usernames free up? How taken names come back
You type the name you want and Discord says it is unavailable. That is not always the end of the story. Discord usernames do come back into circulation, and knowing how and when gives you a real chance to get one.
Why a name is not available
Since Discord moved to unique usernames, every name belongs to one account only. "Username is unavailable" means one of these:
- Another account has it. The most common case.
- It breaks the format. 2 to 32 characters, lowercase letters, digits,
_and., no two periods in a row. See Discord username rules.
Only the first case can change with time. That is what this guide is about.
Three ways a name comes back
The owner changes it
Discord lets anyone change their username up to 2 times a week, for free. Every change gives up the old name. People rename when they find something better, rebrand a stream or simply get bored, so names move constantly.
The owner deletes the account
A deleted account first goes into a "pending deletion" state for 15 days. During that time the owner can log in and cancel. After 15 days the account is deleted for good, and its username stops belonging to anyone.
Discord deletes an inactive account
According to Discord's help center, accounts that have been inactive and unused for 2 years or more are scheduled for deletion, and the owner may be notified by email or phone. Names of long-abandoned accounts come back this way.

How to be first
When a good name frees up, many people may be watching it. Being first is about checking often and acting fast.
Pick your targets
Write down the names you really want, plus a few backups. A watchlist of 10 to 25 names is more realistic than waiting for one perfect name. Ideas: short Discord usernames.
Put them on a watchlist

Questions
Can I reserve a username?
No. Discord has no reservation or waiting list. The first verified account to claim a free name gets it.
If I delete my account, is my name gone at once?
Not for 15 days. During that time the account is pending deletion and you can log in to cancel. After that it is deleted for good.
How often should I check a name?
It depends on how many people want it. A clean 3 or 4 letter name may be taken minutes after it frees up; a longer name can stay free for days. Faster checks cost more of your monthly allowance, so set short intervals only for your top names.
