Rare Roblox usernames: OG, 3L and 4L names explained

On Roblox, a short username is a status symbol. People talk about OG names, 3L and 4L, and some pay real money for them. Here is what those words mean, which rare names you can realistically get and why most of them never come back.

OG, 3L, 4L, 3C: the words

  • 3L, 4L, 5L: a name of 3, 4 or 5 letters only, like Zyx, Kiro or Lumen.
  • 3C, 4C: 3 or 4 characters of any kind, so digits and the underscore count too, like K1r or a_b.
  • OG: an original name from the early years of Roblox. People usually mean accounts made between 2006 and 2010, or a name that has been on one account since then.
  • Word name: a name that is a real word, like Wolf or Pixel. Word names are rare at any length.

Roblox itself does not use any of these terms. They come from players and from people who trade accounts.

Why rare names are rare

A Roblox username has 3 to 20 characters: English letters, digits and at most one underscore, which cannot be first or last. That leaves very few short combinations:

LengthLetters onlyWith digits
317,57646,656
4456,9761,679,616

Roblox has been open since 2006, and every sign-up takes a name. Short names ran out long ago.

Capital letters do not make a new name

KIRO, Kiro and kiro are the same username on Roblox. Changing only the capital letters is a full name change and costs the same Robux.

Kinds of rare names

  • Zyx3L, the rarest kind
  • Kiro4L, pronounceable
  • Wolf4L and a real word
  • Nova_7short, with digit and underscore
  • _Zyxunderscore at the start
  • Ki__rotwo underscores

Value goes roughly in this order: a 3 letter word, any 3L, a 4 letter word, a pronounceable 4L, a 4C with a digit or underscore, then 5 letter words. For what sellers ask for each kind, see how much a Roblox username is worth.

What is still possible

Be realistic about your target:

  • 3L: practically never free. Do not spend money or time hunting them.
  • 3C with digits or an underscore: very rare, most are taken too.
  • 4L: rare. Pronounceable ones and words are almost all gone; odd letter combinations show up more often.
  • 4C with a digit or an underscore: a reasonable target if you check many of them.
  • 5L and readable 5 character names: the best balance. There are about 11.9 million letter-only combinations, so many readable ones are still free.

A useful trick is to think in patterns rather than names. Consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel (Rimo, Tavu) gives names that sound like words. A letter, an underscore and three letters (K_iro) or a word with one digit (Wolf7) are much easier to get than a clean 4L.

01

Check that the name fits the rules

Use the rules check on our Roblox page: 3 to 20 characters, letters, digits and one underscore. It runs in your browser and costs nothing.

02

Make a long list, not one name

Write down 50 to 200 candidates: your favourite word with a digit, short patterns, names in other languages. The longer the list, the better the odds.

03

Try them in Roblox

Roblox shows whether a name is taken when you sign up or change your username, before you pay. Never buy a name change without seeing the name accepted first.

04

Check again over time

A name that is taken today will not free up because its owner renamed, but your list will keep giving you options. Clmify watches whole lists like this on Roblox and Discord and alerts you the second a name frees up.
